EVA vs TPE

EVA vs TPE Car Mats in the UAE: Heat, Sand, Smell and Price Compared

By the SFOM CARMATS workshop, Sharjah · Updated

Short answer. TPE car mats are trays moulded from a 3D scan of a specific model, with raised walls, no smell and a smooth surface, sold for around AED 400–900 and only for models in the maker's catalogue. EVA car mats are honeycomb sheets cut to a pattern of your car, light, odourless and hose-washable, with no high wall; a full measured set from SFOM CARMATS costs AED 250 with stitched leather edging in 9 colours. Both handle UAE heat. TPE wins on walls; EVA wins on fitting any car, on holding sand in its cells and on price. We make EVA and do not make TPE.

Two different products: a moulded tray and a cut sheet

EVA and TPE are often listed side by side as rubber-type mats, but they are made in opposite ways. A TPE mat is moulded: the maker scans the floor of one model, cuts a steel mould and forms the tray from thermoplastic elastomer, walls and all. An EVA mat is cut: a flat honeycomb sheet is laid on a cutting machine and cut to a pattern of the floor, then edged.

That difference decides everything else. A mould is expensive, so it exists only for models that sell in volume and only in the trims the maker scanned. A pattern is cheap to take, so it can exist for any car, including a Land Cruiser 79 with aftermarket seats or a Wrangler on a lift.

TPE: moulded, walled, odourless, catalogue only

A model-specific TPE tray is a good product where it exists. It sits in the footwell like a bath: walls up the sill and the tunnel, a lip at the front, the fixing points moulded in. TPE has no plasticisers, so it does not smell in the heat. It hoses clean and dries in minutes.

Its limits are three. The catalogue: if your model, generation or trim was not scanned, there is no tray, and a close one fits badly. The surface: TPE is smooth or lightly ribbed, so sand rolls around the tray under your feet and grinds rather than sitting still. The price: a full set from the established makers is around AED 400–900 in the UAE, and a trunk liner is extra.

EVA: cut to a pattern for any car, light, odourless, AED 250

EVA is a closed-cell foam sheet with a honeycomb or diamond-cell surface. The cells are the point: sand, water and a spilled coffee drop into them and stay there, off your shoes and off the carpet, until you lift the mat and rinse it with a hose. Closed-cell means it does not absorb water or smells, and it has no plasticisers to off-gas at 60–70°C.

Because it is cut rather than moulded, EVA fits any car. We cut from a pattern we already have for your model, or from one taken at your car in about 15 minutes, on a cutting machine in our Sharjah workshop, and finish each mat with stitched leather edging in one of 9 colours. Roll colours are black, beige, blue and orange. A full EVA set is AED 250 and a trunk mat adds AED 80.

Its limits are honest ones. There is no high wall: the mat is flat with a stitched edge, so a litre of water poured into the footwell is not contained the way a tray contains it. It is softer than TPE, so a heel that always lands in one spot will show wear sooner. And it is a mat, not a bath, in how it looks.

  • TPE: moulded per model, walls and lip, smooth surface, around AED 400–900, catalogue only

EVA vs TPE car mats in heat, sand and smell

On heat both pass. Neither TPE nor EVA contains the plasticisers that make PVC 5D and 7D trays smell, and neither is a glued laminate, so there is nothing to separate. TPE holds its moulded shape; EVA stays flat. If you have had a PVC tray that reeked in June, either of these is the fix.

On sand they differ. A TPE tray keeps sand inside its walls but lets it roll on the smooth floor, so it migrates under the pedals and grinds under your heel. EVA cells hold each grain where it lands until you rinse, which is why EVA is the usual choice for dune trips and beach runs. Both hose clean; EVA is lighter to carry to the tap.

On smell both are effectively zero, which is the main reason to choose either over a PVC tray.

Which one for which car

Choose TPE if your car is a standard-trim model in the maker's catalogue and you want walls: a Camry, a Tucson, a current Land Cruiser 300 or Patrol Y62 in stock form, parked on tarmac, where the tray exists and the lip earns its price.

Choose measured EVA for a Hilux, a Land Cruiser 79, a Wrangler, a Defender, or anything that goes on the dunes. These cars are lifted, re-seated and re-railed more often than not, so the tray catalogue either does not cover them or does not fit them. A pattern covers any of them, the cells hold the sand the trip brings back, and a single mat can be recut from the same pattern if a boot or a jerrycan ruins it.

Choose EVA too if the car is not in any tray catalogue, which covers most new Chinese models, most vans and most cars over a few years old, or if AED 250 is the budget. The trunk is a separate decision: an EVA trunk mat at AED 80 goes with any cabin set, even wool.

We make EVA and do not make TPE

We do not make TPE trays; moulding needs a steel tool per model and a scan of every trim, which is a different business from a cutting workshop. We say so rather than sell a lookalike. If a walled tray is what your car needs and it exists for your model, buy it.

What we make is the measured set: EVA at AED 250, Polyamide 12mm at AED 450, Sky Star 20mm at AED 900 and Premium Wool at AED 1400, each cut to your car and finished with stitched leather edging. The car mat price list shows all four with the trunk mat add-on. Questions

Which is better in the UAE heat, EVA or TPE?

Both are fine at 60–70°C: neither contains PVC plasticisers or a glued foam layer, so neither smells or separates. The choice comes down to walls (TPE) versus fitting any car and holding sand in cells (EVA).

Do EVA car mats have raised walls?

No. Our EVA sets are flat mats cut to the floor with a stitched leather edge; the honeycomb cells hold sand and water. If a high wall is your priority, a TPE tray for your model is the better tool.

Do you make TPE car mats?

No. TPE trays are moulded per model and need a steel tool for each one. We cut measured EVA, pile, polyamide and wool sets in our Sharjah workshop, from AED 250.

How much do EVA car mats cost?

A measured full set is AED 250 with stitched leather edging, and a trunk mat adds AED 80. Measuring and fitting are included in Dubai and Sharjah.
