3D vs 5D vs 7D Car Mats: What the Numbers Mean, UAE Prices and Whether They Are Worth It

By the SFOM CARMATS workshop, Sharjah · Updated

Short answer. 3D, 5D and 7D are marketing labels, not standards. A 3D mat is a moulded tray with walls, usually TPE or rubber. A 5D mat is a foam tray wrapped in PVC leather with stitched edges, and a 7D mat is a 5D tray with a removable grass layer on top; 9D and 10D are 5D again with extra stitching. In the UAE, universal 3D mats sell for around AED 100–200, 5D and 7D sets for around AED 250–800 and model-specific TPE trays for around AED 400–900. SFOM CARMATS makes none of them: we cut measured EVA, pile, polyamide and wool sets in our Sharjah workshop, AED 250–1400 with stitched leather edging.

The D is marketing, not a standard

There is no body that defines what a 3D, 5D or 7D car mat is. The numbers started as a way to say this one has walls and then went up every time a seller added a layer. Two products labelled 5D from two shops can be built differently, and a 9D from one seller is a 7D from another.

So ignore the number and read the construction. There are only three things a mat can be: a flat cut sheet, a moulded tray, or a laminated tray. Everything with a D on it is one of the last two, and the material decides how it behaves in a car that sits in the sun.

This guide sorts the labels into those constructions, gives UAE prices for each, and ends with what actually matters: the accuracy of the pattern, how the mat is fixed, and how it behaves at 60–70°C and in sand.

3D: a moulded tray, usually TPE or rubber

A 3D mat is a one-piece tray formed in a mould, with walls that rise up the sills and the tunnel. The good ones are TPE, a thermoplastic elastomer, moulded from a 3D scan of the specific model, which is where the name comes from. The cheap ones are rubber or PVC, formed in a generic mould and sold as universal fit.

A model-specific TPE tray fits well because the mould is the car. It has no smell, the surface is smooth, and it hoses clean. Its limits are the catalogue, only models the maker has scanned; the smooth surface, which lets sand roll around rather than sit still; and the price. A universal 3D tray fits nothing exactly: the walls end up in the wrong place and the mat is trimmed with scissors.

5D: foam, PVC skin and stitching; 7D adds a grass layer

A 5D mat is a laminated tray: a sheet of XPE foam wrapped in PVC leather, stitched around the edge, heat-formed with low walls. It looks like a leather floor, which is its whole appeal; more on that tray in 5D car mats in Dubai: prices and our alternative. A 7D mat is a 5D tray with a loose grass-textured loop layer on top. 9D and 10D are the same 5D tray with a diamond stitch or a second foam layer.

The weak points are the same for all of them. The PVC skin releases plasticisers in the heat, which is the smell. The foam is glued to the skin, and heat cycling separates the layers, so walls slump and corners lift. The grass on a 7D traps sand and does not release it, and it wears the skin under it.

Fit is by mould per model generation. A different trim, a different seat rail, an aftermarket seat, and the tray no longer matches. There is no pattern for your car, only for the model.

  • 3D: moulded tray, TPE (model-specific) or rubber and PVC (universal)
  • 5D: XPE foam + PVC skin + stitched edge, low walls
  • 7D: 5D tray + removable grass layer
  • 9D and 10D: 5D tray + extra stitching or foam

What actually matters: pattern, fixing, heat, sand

Four things decide whether a mat works in the UAE, and none of them is the D. First, the pattern: is the mat made to your car's floor, to a mould of the model, or in one shape for everyone? Second, fixing: does it sit on the factory fixing points or rely on its own weight and a rubber nub? A mat that slides under the pedals is a safety issue before it is a comfort issue.

Third, heat. A cabin reaches 60–70°C in summer. PVC off-gasses and softens; glued laminates separate; TPE, EVA, pile, polyamide and wool do not. Fourth, sand. A smooth surface lets sand roll; a grass layer holds it; a honeycomb cell holds it until you rinse; a pile shakes and vacuums out.

Judge any mat on those four and the label stops mattering. A measured EVA set is a flat cut sheet with no walls that scores on pattern, fixing, heat and sand. A model-specific TPE tray scores on fixing, heat and walls and loses on catalogue and on sand rolling. A 5D or 7D tray scores on looks and loses on heat.

3D vs 5D vs 7D car mats: UAE prices by type

Prices in the UAE fall into bands that overlap. Universal 3D trays in rubber or PVC are around AED 100–200 a set on noon and Amazon.ae. 5D and 7D sets for named models run around AED 250–800 depending on seller, trim and how many pieces are in the box. Model-specific TPE trays from the established makers are around AED 400–900.

Our measured sets are AED 250 in EVA, AED 450 in Polyamide 12mm and AED 900 in Sky Star 20mm and AED 1400 in Premium Wool, each with stitched leather edging in one of 9 colours, and measuring and fitting at your place included in Dubai and Sharjah. A trunk mat adds AED 80, 150 or 300 by material; the car mat price list has the detail.

So a measured EVA set costs what a mid-range 5D set costs, and a measured wool set costs what a top-end TPE tray costs. What you pay for is different in each case: a mould and a label on one side, a pattern for your car and a stitched edge on the other.

Who should buy what

Buy a model-specific TPE tray if you want walls and a lip, your car is in the maker's catalogue and it is standard trim. Buy a 5D or 7D set only if the leather look matters more than the first-summer smell and you park in shade. Skip universal 3D trays unless the car is a short rental.

Buy a measured EVA set at AED 250 if you carry sand and water, drive a pick-up, an off-road build or a family car that goes to the beach, or your car is not in any tray catalogue. Buy a measured pile or wool set if the cabin is the point and you clean it dry.

We make only the measured sets, described in our guide to car mats in Dubai. We do not make 3D, 5D, 7D, TPE or diamond-quilted eco-leather, and when a tray is the better tool for your car we say so on WhatsApp at +971 58 517 2771.

Questions

Is 7D better than 5D?

Only if you want the grass layer. 7D is a 5D tray with a removable grass mat on top; the tray, the PVC skin and the heat behaviour are the same. The grass traps sand and is hard to empty.

Are 3D car mats worth it in the UAE?

A model-specific TPE 3D tray is worth it if you want walls and your car is in the catalogue. A universal 3D tray at around AED 100–200 fits no car exactly and is usually trimmed with scissors.

What does 9D or 10D mean?

The same 5D construction with an extra stitched pattern or foam layer. There is no standard behind the number.

Do you make 3D, 5D or 7D mats?

No. We cut measured EVA, pile, polyamide and wool sets in our Sharjah workshop, AED 250–1400, with stitched leather edging. We do not make PVC trays, TPE liners or diamond-quilted eco-leather.

Which type is best for sand?

A measured EVA set: the honeycomb cells hold sand until you rinse the mat with a hose. A TPE tray hoses clean too but lets sand roll on its smooth surface. A 7D grass layer traps sand and holds it.
