Car mat materials compared

Wool vs polyamide car mats (plus pile and EVA): which one suits your car in Dubai sand and daily driving

By the SFOM CARMATS workshop, Sharjah · Updated

Short answer. Wool is the softest car mat material but needs weekly vacuuming and must never be hosed, while Sky Star 20mm, a deep polyamide weave, gives the look of wool with the wear of polyamide, and a full custom set is AED 1400 in natural wool or AED 900 in Sky Star 20mm. For sand and beach trips, a hose-washable EVA set at AED 250 is the easiest to keep clean, and Polyamide 12mm at AED 450 is the everyday carpet option. SFOM CARMATS cuts every set to the car in its own Sharjah workshop, with measuring and fitting included in Dubai.

Four materials built for four different jobs

Wool, polyamide, pile and EVA are not grades of the same mat; each one is built for a different kind of use. EVA is a honeycomb or diamond-cell material, custom cut to the floor and rinsed with a hose. Polyamide 12mm is a dense 12 mm polyamide pile. Sky Star 20mm is a deep, dense polyamide weave with the look of wool and the wear of polyamide, with a sparkle surface in blue and red, and Premium Wool is a 20 mm+ natural pile made for luxury cabins.

Every material is cut on our own cutting machine in our Sharjah workshop and finished with stitched leather edging that we sew ourselves. The fit and the edge are the same whichever material you pick. What changes is the feel underfoot, how much cleaning the mat asks of you and the kind of cabin it suits. Nothing is resold, and each custom set is made for one car.

Feel underfoot: wool is softest, EVA is not carpet at all

Premium Wool is the softest of the four materials, with a natural pile 20 mm or deeper. It gives a luxury cabin a finished look. Choose it when comfort and appearance matter more than how fast the mat can be cleaned after a day at the beach or in the desert.

Nylon sits a step below wool on softness and is chosen for how it wears. Our Sky Star 20mm weave is deep and dense, with the look of wool and the wear of polyamide; in blue and red it has a sparkle surface. Polyamide 12mm is a dense 12 mm polyamide pile, a familiar carpet feel for daily driving, with a reinforced heel pad under the driver.

EVA does not feel like carpet at all. It is a honeycomb or diamond-cell surface rather than a pile, so if softness is your priority, pick one of the carpet materials. What EVA offers instead is the least work when sand, mud or a spilled drink gets into the car, because it rinses clean with a hose.

Sand and spills: EVA takes a hose, wool never does

In UAE conditions, the biggest practical difference between materials is how you get the sand out. EVA is hose-washable: lift the mats out, rinse them and put them back once they are dry. That makes EVA a good fit for beach runs and for desert trips in the camping season, which runs from October to April according to Khaleej Times.

Pile and polyamide are cleaned dry. Shake the mats out, vacuum them and use a damp cloth on spills. After a desert day, a quick shake gets the loose sand out, and a proper vacuum later keeps the pile looking right. The same routine works for Polyamide 12mm and Sky Star 20mm.

Wool needs the most care. Vacuum it weekly, blot spills with mild soap and never use a hose. If you drive to the beach often but want a wool cabin, many owners choose wool in the cabin and an EVA mat in the trunk, where wet bags and sandy gear land.

  • Polyamide 12mm: shake out, vacuum, damp cloth for spills
  • Sky Star 20mm: shake out, vacuum, damp cloth for spills
  • Premium Wool: vacuum weekly, blot spills with mild soap, no hose

Wear: polyamide for heavy use, a heel pad for the driver

For heavy daily use, choose nylon: the Sky Star 20mm weave gives the look of wool with the wear of polyamide. Natural wool is the softest option but depends on weekly vacuuming to stay at its best. Polyamide 12mm sets come with a reinforced heel pad under the driver, where the heel rests on every drive.

Extra details can be added on request. Quilted or diamond-stitched heel pads, contrast stitching and embroidery of an emblem, initials, model name or logo are all priced by design on WhatsApp. Whatever the material, stitched leather edging finishes the outline in one of 9 stock colours, including black, beige, brown and red, with more on request at the same price.

EVA is the easiest material to bring back to clean: a rinse with a hose removes what has built up, with no pile to vacuum. That makes it a practical choice for work cars and family cars that carry sand, and for the trunk even when the cabin has a wool set.

Which cabin suits which material

Match the material to how the car is used, not only to its price (all four are in the car mat price list). EVA at AED 250 suits a family car that goes to the beach on weekends, a work car or a desert vehicle. Polyamide 12mm at AED 450 suits everyday cars where you want carpet underfoot and a reinforced heel pad for the driver.

Sky Star 20mm, at AED 900, suits owners who want a wool look with the wear of polyamide, or the sparkle-surface weave in blue or red, for example in a hard-working family Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser. Both were among the UAE's top-selling models in 2025, according to Best Selling Cars Blog. Premium Wool, at AED 1400, fits luxury cabins such as a Rolls-Royce Cullinan or a Range Rover.

Vans and VIP cabins such as the Mercedes V-Class, Toyota Alphard, Hyundai Staria and VW Multivan can also have full-floor carpeting, priced after a free measure. A third row adds about 35% to the set price, and a front-only set costs about 25% less.

Mixing materials and ordering a set

You do not have to use one material for the whole car. The trunk mat can be any material and any colour, even one that differs from the set. EVA adds AED 80, Polyamide 12mm AED 150, and Sky Star 20mm or Premium Wool AED 300. Many owners choose an EVA trunk mat even with a wool set, so sandy gear and wet bags stay off the wool.

Questions

Are wool or polyamide car mats better in Dubai?

Wool is the softest and suits luxury cabins, but it needs weekly vacuuming and cannot be hosed. Sky Star 20mm is a deep, dense polyamide weave that gives the look of wool with the wear of polyamide, with a sparkle surface in blue and red. Sky Star 20mm costs AED 900 for a full custom set and Premium Wool AED 1400, with measuring and fitting included in Dubai.

Can I wash wool car mats with a hose?

No. Vacuum wool weekly and blot spills with mild soap. If you want mats you can hose down, choose EVA, which rinses clean.

Which car mat material is best for sand and desert trips?

EVA is the most practical for sand because you can rinse it with a hose. A custom EVA set costs AED 250. Many owners also choose an EVA trunk mat, AED 80, even with a wool set.

Polyamide 12mm or Sky Star 20mm: what is the difference?

Both are polyamide. Polyamide 12mm is a dense, short 12 mm pile for an everyday car, at AED 450 with a reinforced heel pad under the driver. Sky Star 20mm is a deep 20 mm weave with the look of wool, at AED 900. The difference is depth, feel underfoot and price.

Do you make rubber or 5D car mats?

No. We do not sell rubber mats, tall-wall 5D or 7D trays, or quilted diamond eco-leather mats. Our range is EVA, pile, polyamide and wool, custom cut with stitched leather edging.

How long does a custom set take?

Measuring takes about 15 minutes. Stocked colours are ready within 1–2 days and made-to-order colours take 2 to 4 days. Fitting at the car takes about 10 minutes.
